Become a mentor

Become a mentor

Becoming a mentor is a great way to develop your leadership skills and champion future talent.

We work with leaders to share insight and build lasting cross-sector professional relationships.  As a WIG mentor, you’ll support and challenge a talented peer from a different sector as they work towards development goals.  Mentors also benefit not only from the cross-sector insight that mentees bring to the one-to-one relationship, but from the knowledge and understanding that sharing and listening collectively brings.

Benefits of being a mentor

Are you looking to develop your own leadership and teaching skills? Do you want to support future leaders and broaden your perspective by learning about the challenges of different roles and sectors?

If so, then becoming a mentor could be for you.

As an experienced senior professional, you can support your mentee through regular, confidential sessions to share your knowledge and encourage their professional development.

Mentors benefit from the process alongside their mentee.  You can benefit through:

  • Developing greater self-analysis through questioning and listening
  • Gaining insight into working life in different roles and sectors
  • Refining your leadership and coaching skills
  • Raising your leadership profile

"I have become a WIG mentor, which has provided me a great opportunity to support a talent from a completely different industry in their development. I will continue to draw on WIG’s resources and expertise as I develop through this role. "

The mentoring process

Our talent team supports mentors and mentees through a year-long relationship to ensure productive and supportive relationships.

The process involves:

  1. Objectives – our mentoring coordinator works with each mentee to understand the development goals they want to meet through mentoring.
  2. Matching – we’ll identify potential mentors with the right skills, experience and insight to help the mentee develop.
  3. Goal setting – at their first meeting, the mentor and mentee will agree and record specific, practical goals for their relationship.
  4. Regular meetings – through regular monthly meetings, the mentor and mentee will work towards achieving a personally tailored action plan.
  5. Three-month review – our mentoring coordinator will check in with the mentor and mentee to assess the effectiveness of the relationship and provide any support needed.
  6. Final review and evaluation – we’ll check in with the mentor and mentee individually to evaluate their experience of the mentoring programme.

Each mentoring relationship lasts up to one year with a time commitment of up to two hours per month.
