Public Affairs Manager

Legal & General Group Plc

Established in 1836, Legal & General is one of the UK’s leading financial services groups and a major global investor. We are a leading international player in institutional retirement, in retail savings and protection, and in both public and private markets through our Asset Management division. Across the Group, we are committed to responsible investing and dedicated to serving the long-term savings and investment needs of customers and society.

Our Group Functions provide the services that all areas of the business need. This requires a talented and diverse team behind the scenes, who enable everyone at Legal & General to do what they do best. Joining us means helping to improve the lives of our customers and contributing to the success of the business every day.

We are seeking a secondee from the Civil Service for a Public Affairs Manager (substantive Civil Service Grade equivalent 6-7) to join our Corporate Affairs function, which brings together external communications, employee communications, brand, sustainability, social media, and public affairs teams.

The Public Affairs Manager will support the development and delivery of our public affairs strategy, working alongside group and divisional colleagues to strengthen our political relationships, build our reputation, and proactively manage public policy issues.  We see this as an excellent secondment opportunity to work at the heart of one of the UK’s biggest-listed companies to get first hand commercial experience.

The secondment is initially for 12 months (extension potentially negotiable) starting on c. 1st April 2025.

  • Working within the Public Affairs team to deliver our public affairs strategy, to protect our reputation and support business objectives.

  • Helping to build L&G’s profile and impact by managing specific policy projects e.g. consultation responses, externally commissioned research and/ or a discreet public project.

  • Brief senior leaders across L&G on the risks and opportunities emerging from the policy and political landscape – principally in the UK, but potentially also EU policy.

  • The opportunity to represent L&G externally – whether at meetings or at agreed events.

  • Supporting the production of relevant policy content for external engagement and internal briefings, with a focus on writing, research and analysis.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with political stakeholders, the wider policymaking ecosystem, and industry trade bodies.

  • Working closely with teams across L&G including colleagues in the wider Corporate Affairs function to ensure that our positions are effectively communicated.

  • Driving continuous improvement of public affairs processes, measurement, and evaluation to strengthen cross divisional planning and collaboration.

  • Demonstrable experience of working in the Civil Service, ideally at HM Treasury for 2-3 years in the last 5 years.

  • Strong stakeholder management and engagement skills with proven experience of working across both HM Treasury as well as OGD’s such as No10, DWP, DBT and HMRC.

  • Experience working on the policy issues relating to financial services - long term savings and pensions experience, or an interest in, would be desirable.

  • Excellent written and spoken English.

  • Ability to work autonomously, but naturally inclined to seek input and perspective from a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Responsive and delivery-focused, able to turn around quality work swiftly and prioritise a varied workload.

If you are applying for the position, please submit the following by the 28th of February 2025:

  • A detailed CV and a covering letter (1-2 pages setting out interest and how experience meets requirements)
