A year on from the publication of the Net Zero Strategy, we explore how the UK is educating construction workers on sustainable skills to build towards a net zero carbon emission future. Employing over 2.7 million people and contributing 8% of output, the construction industry is essential to both the UK's infrastructure and economy.

Speakers at the Event

Mark was appointed Mace’s Group Chief Executive in 2013 and Chairman in January 2022. He has overseen the company’s revenue growth from £1bn to £2bn. He has consistently championed change within the industry, driving innovation to improve service excellence while ensuring Mace continues to be a more productive, efficient and responsible company. 

In 2021 Mace launched a new ambitious 2026 strategy to become a purpose driven company focusing on three strategic priorities; pursue a sustainable world, grow together, and deliver distinctive value. He has set clear targets for Mace to grow its revenue by 10% and margin by 20% annually, invest 3.5% revenue in R&D every year and contribute 1% of pre-tax profit to its communities through the Mace Foundation. 

Mark gained his early experience in the commercial and aviation sectors, and was the Deputy Programme Director for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mark was appointed in June 2022 as Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council, alongside the UK's Minister for Construction, to help lead the next steps of our industry’s transformation. Mark is also a Board Director for BusinessLDN and the Northern Powerhouse Partnership.

Dr Mike Pitts leads Innovate UK’s Net Zero Heat programme and is the Deputy Challenge Director for Transforming Construction, a £420m programme that was part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. He was previously Head of Urban Systems at Innovate UK, covering the priority areas of Urban Living and Smart Infrastructure. He joined Innovate UK in 2012 to lead on embedding sustainability across Innovate UK’s strategy and has run programmes on cleantech, resource efficiency and environmental data.

Natalie is the Head of Legacy at HS2 ltd, and she is responsible for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, Skills, Education and Employment. Prior to taking on this role in early 2022, Natalie was in leadership roles at HS2 ltd in Community & Stakeholder Engagement. Before joining HS2 in 2018 Natalie worked in senior roles across a wide range of sectors, including health, education, welfare and public sector audit. She has been leading teams for over 25 years, and is passionate about integrity and fairness.
